CASCADE VS. SHEPHERDS WOOL

You may have noticed that we has switched from Cascade 220 to Shepherd Wool.  While we are happy to do special orders for any Cascade yarn, our decision to switch is first because we believe that Shepard Wool is superior for all hand knitting projects and felting and secondly because of the Cascade company decison to sell to "big box" stores.  While not yet happening in the San Diego area we believe that it is important to support LYS, whoever and where ever they are.  The failure of one shop because of this practice is a failure of all shops.  We spent a great deal of time looking for a substitue that was acceptable and we believe that we have found a superior a product.

Shepherd Wool, distributed by Westminster Fiber, is a 100% Australian wool that comes in a worsted wt., 220 ydr. ball (no more winding!), priced at $6.60.  Suggested needle size is a US 6-7 with a gauge of 5-51/2 sts. per inch.  All the same as Cascade.  The real difference is a superior hand (much softer with a less plastic feel) and a beautiful boucle texture when felted.  This yarn felts a little faster so please check your progress a little sooner if you are used to using Cascade.  While not yet available in a bulky weight - and I admit, I do like Cascade 128 - give it a try.  We think that you will be happy with the yarn.

ENCORE VS. ELLA RAE

Another switch that we are trying is Ella Rae, distributed by KFI Yarns.  Ella Rae is the same composition and put up as Encore.  This switich is currently on a trial basis and again, we will be happy to special order Encore or any other Plymouth product.  While not having quite the color selection at the shop yet, both products are very similar except again, a superior product.  Many people have complained about pilling with Encore after washing, a problem that Ella Rae does not seem to have.  In a test, Ella Rae washed and dried three times with jeans hold it shape, color and no pilling.  Needle size and gauge are the same but Ella Rae comes with much better pattern support.  Give it a try and give us your opinion.
